On Saturday, numerous Twitter users from various countries experienced difficulties accessing the popular social media platform, encountering either complete unavailability or encountering challenges and delays.
"Two hot topics making waves on the US Twitter app are "Rate Limit Exceeded" and "#TwitterDown," garnering significant attention from users.
The former has amassed over 40,000 tweets as of Saturday noon.
Around 8 am EST, reports of outages began to emerge, as indicated by DownDetector, and steadily increased throughout the morning.
By noon EST, DownDetector recorded over 7,400 reports of outages across the platform.
Users, including CNN journalists, raised concerns about their feeds failing to load and encountered an error message stating, "Sorry, you are rate limited.
Please wait a few moments, then try again."
Additionally, others reported encountering errors indicating an inability to retrieve tweets from the site."
Musk Implements Policy Changes to Address Twitter Issues
Following reports of user problems on Twitter, billionaire owner Elon Musk took to the platform to announce the implementation of temporary limits aimed at combating excessive data scraping and system manipulation.
In a tweet, Musk revealed that verified accounts would be restricted to reading 6,000 posts per day, while unverified accounts would be limited to 600.
Additionally, new unverified accounts would have a daily limit of 300 posts.
As part of Twitter's revenue growth strategy, Musk introduced a blue verification check mark exclusively for users who subscribe to the Twitter Blue service.
Musk later stated that he plans to raise the limits in the near future.
Verified users will soon be able to read up to 8,000 tweets per day, unverified users will have a limit of 800, and new unverified accounts will be restricted to 400 posts per day.
The connectivity issues faced by Twitter users sparked frustration, leading to trending topics such as "Wtf twitter" and "Thanks Elon" in the United States.
Notably, Twitter had recently restricted access to its platform for non-logged-in users, though it remained uncertain whether this change was intentional or a glitch.
Most of the reported problems on Saturday occurred on the website (44%), followed by issues reported on the app (39%).
CNN sought comment from Twitter regarding the matter, but the platform responded with an automated poop emoji.
This incident marks another significant service disruption on Twitter since Elon Musk assumed ownership, with over 8,000 users reporting disruptions during a previous outage in March.
Musk's latest endeavor to revive the struggling platform, which experienced a mass departure of advertisers, involves the appointment of Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO.
